Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy

CESUD (Community Empowerment for Sustainable Development) is dedicated to ensuring a safe, nurturing, and protective environment for all children, orphans, and vulnerable individuals who participate in or benefit from our programs. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or harassment.

1. Core Principles of Protection

  • Best Interests of the Child: Every action and decision affecting children under our care is guided by what is best for the child.
  • Nondiscrimination: All children have equal rights to protection, regardless of gender, race, tribe, physical ability, or socio-economic background.
  • Informed Consent: Active, informed consent is obtained from parents or legal guardians before children are featured in media or participate in school field trips.

2. Staff and Volunteer Recruitment Vetting

  • Mandatory Certificate of Good Conduct for all full-time staff and long-term field officers prior to placement.
  • Double reference check protocol for all volunteers and interns deployed in school-based green clubs and nutrition programs.
  • Bi-annual training on child rights and child protection laws for all field supervisors and community facilitators.

3. Safe Coding of Conduct in the Field

  • No staff member or volunteer is permitted to be alone with a child in a closed space or outside designated program hours.
  • No physical discipline or abusive language is tolerated under any circumstances.
  • Strict guidelines on digital interactions: Staff are prohibited from adding child beneficiaries on personal social media channels.

4. Incident Reporting & Investigation Workflow

  • Confidential reporting channel managed directly by the Project Officer for OVC & Social Advocacy (Social Worker).
  • Immediate referral of suspected abuse cases to local child welfare authorities in Kakamega County within 24 hours.
  • Strict confidentiality protocols to protect the identity of the victim and whistleblower during inquiry processes.
