Gender Equality & Social Inclusion (GESI) Policy

At CESUD, social equity and local agency are the bedrocks of sustainable development. This policy outlines our operational framework to eliminate barriers and guarantee equal opportunity, leadership representation, and asset ownership for women, teenage mothers, youth, and persons with disabilities.

1. Inclusion and Training Cohort Selection

  • We enforce a strict minimum of 60% female representation in all training programs, including Lead Farmer selection and smallholder agroecological cooperatives.
  • At least 40% of leadership roles in community-based farmer groups and water user associations supported by CESUD must be held by women.
  • All training schedules are optimized to accommodate domestic care schedules and maternal routines of female smallholders.

2. Focus on Teenage Mothers & OVCs

  • Priority allocation of micro-livestock assets (poultry, rabbits) and smart kitchen gardening seeds to adolescent mothers to foster economic independence.
  • Dedicated psychosocial circles and child care support during field training events to enable teen mothers to participate fully.
  • Targeted reintegration packages (uniforms, school kits) to help girls return to primary and vocational school after birth.

3. Physical and Cultural Inclusion Standards

  • Training methodologies are translated into both English and Swahili to ensure accessibility for semi-literate and grassroots farmers.
  • Community demonstration plots are established on physically accessible sites to accommodate elders and persons with mobility constraints.
  • Sensitization dialogs addressing cultural Luhya and Teso taboos surrounding land tenure and female farming asset ownership are regularly held.
